Well, considering it’s made $80 million in the last 40 days, $66 million in its first three days, with $26 million of that (or a little less than 20% of its total revenue) on opening day, yeah, I’ll stand by the slumping box office statement.
It only made over $8 million in a day four times, lost 35% of its audience in its second day, lost 75% of its opening day audience on its second Friday, and hasn’t had a per-screen average of over $5,000 since its second day.
Sex and the City is a classic example of a movie that has a strong opening weekend and fades. we always say around here that a movie that performs well at the box office, irrespective of what it costs or anything else, makes 30% of its money in its first weekend. That’s the standard big boy movies shoot for. for Sex and the City, that would mean another $40-$50 million. That won’t happen, not even close. By definition, that’s box office performance that has dwindled since its opening weekend.
