Fox 2000 has decided to take “Monte Carlo” in a whole new direction. According to Variety, the studio secured Selena Gomez to play one of three leads and Leighton Meester is possibly in the midst of negotiations to take one of the remaining two. It’s clear the massive success of “Twilight” and other films featuring Hollywood’s youngest stars has seriously influenced Fox 2000. Why else would they leave the plan to have Nicole Kidman and possibly Julia Roberts to star behind?
News of that powerhouse taking the lead surfaced in 2007, but now it’s a new year and Fox is going for a new look. rather than having three Midwestern teachers posing as wealthy women in Monaco, it’ll be two college students and one recent high school grad. Nicole is still on board to produce and may still assume a supporting role.
The film’s director, Tom Bezucha, co-wrote the original script with Maria Maggenti based on Jules Bass’ novel “Headhunters.” Tom handled the re-writes with a new partner, April Blair and now he’s prepping to begin lensing in may. the plan is to shoot in Monaco, Budapest and Paris.
Having young women get into this type of situation sounds like it could be fun, but it’s a little disappointing to hear that the studio took it on at a Nicole/Julia concept’s expense. Add on someone like Angelina Jolie and we’d be talking the ultimate female trio. but, no, we’re getting Selena and possibly Leighton, and that’s fine too. Tom doesn’t have too much experience behind the lens having only directed two features, but “The Family Stone” is immensely enjoyable and “Big Eden” has a good reputation as well.
Who do you want to star alongside Gomez? Would you rather see Kidman and Roberts in the lead roles?
