The Ithaca College men’s lacrosse team fell to 0-2 to open the season after an 11-2 loss to Union on Wednesday.
The Bombers trailed by five goals when Andrew Bruce scored Ithaca’s first goal with 6:46 left in the second quarter on a Brendan Donelan assist.
Tom Mongelli accounted for Ithaca’s other goal off a Michael Edwards third-quarter feed.
Brendan Kinnane had three goals and four assists for the Dutchmen (2-1).
David Gal made 11 saves for the Bombers.
Ithaca controlled the faceoff-X (12-of-15) after winning just four draws in its season-opening loss to Scranton.
The Bombers play Geneseo at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Onondaga Community College.
Scholarship for Scheffer
Ithaca College women’s soccer standout Amy Scheffer has been awarded a postgraduate scholarship by the NCAA.
Scheffer is one of just 29 winners from all three NCAA divisions.
Scheffer is a two-time all-American midfielder and earned first-team academic all-America honors this year. she was named Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year for the second season in a row and was a first-team all-conference selection for the third consecutive year.
Scheffer is the ninth IC athlete to earn a postgraduate scholarship and the first since field hockey player Brooke Aldrich in 2005.
Wallenbeck honored
Women’s track and field assistant coach Mary Wallenbeck has been named Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Association.
Working primarily with the team’s jumpers, Wallenbeck has helped the Bombers to Empire 8, NYSCTC and ECAC Championships this season.
Three jumpers — Emma Dewart, Marcia McCord and Lauren Koppel — have qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Gymnasts saluted
Sophomore Kimberly Callahan has been named ECAC Specialist of the Week and Chelsea Robie earned freshman of the week honors.
Callahan won the balance beam Saturday against Cortland with a 9.7 and Robie posted a 9.45 on the uneven bars.
