Twitter has become one of the largest and most effective social networking tools out there. It’s used to get the word out about nearly everything. and it turns out that if you have a lot of followers, you can also do a lot of good. According to a recent article on Tonic, Alyssa Milano has been tremendously successful in using Twitter as a tool to raise money for charity: water, a nonprofit working to supply clean water to those in need. Milano tweeted to all her lovely fans that she had set a goal of raising $25,000 for her clean water campaign and it took a mere five hours to handily reach the number. It seemed every goal she set, she hit in short order, upping the goal to $50,000 and then $75,000. Today she has raised $92,568 for the charity.

In short, Milano celebrated her 37th birthday by raising enough money to provide fresh, safe drinking water for 4,628 people. It can be difficult to imagine the idea of not having access to clean drinking water, but for 1 billion people in the world today, it’s a reality and charity: water is doing great work to alleviate this horrible problem for so many. in almost three years, charity: water has raised over $13 million and funded 1,548 water projects. The charity gives 100 percent, that’s right 100 percent, of its funding to water projects and for just $20 you can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years, according to charity: water’s site.

Elizabeth wrote about all the green actions that you can take on Twitter like twittering about the farmers’ market, going vegetarian, environmental nonprofits, and traveling green. Through the Nature Conservancy’s Tweet for Nature feature and Twitter, resolution makers receive the opportunity to tweet ready-made resolutions like “In 2010, I will ride my bike to work two or more days a week,” or create their own. and it’s an easy way to get the word out about your favorite green charity, even if you’re not a celebrity.
